system, and other items are available but cannot be used to replace
older versions available to me before I retired, except at very high
cost. I'm working on getting 10.11 going, including 10.6.8 in a virtual
machine for those things I can't or won't update, and the current
problem is that Google Chrome and Chromium's most recent releases
require at least 10.9. (I have been using Chrome recently for websites
still insisting on Flash, which is otherwise now absent from my
computer. But first I try either Firefox or Safari spoofing Firefox on
an iPad; only when that doesn't work do I resort to Chrome.)
I downloaded Chromium 50.0.2661.75 and, as expected, it refused to open
under 10.6.8. So I went in with Property List Editor and edited the
Info.plist file so that where it had listed Minimum system version as
10.9.0, it now says 10.6.8. Then Chromium opened, was able to import my
Firefox bookmarks, and so far appears to be working normally. Now I
realize that some fine day a newer version of Chromium may come out for
which this trick isn't going to work, but in the meantime, what
drawbacks are there to what I have done? If the people writing this
software just no longer want to check whether it works properly under
10.6.8, that's fine by me. Some Adobe software (what little I still use)
typically claims to work only under 10.7 or later (or in some cases only
somewhat more recent versions that even 10.7) and so far tweaking the
Info.plist file has worked well for it.
